WAKE UP CALL
by John Accomando
I think there is a great deal of banking on the notion that we’ll be “outta here” before the tribulation starts, but what will everyone do if the popular teaching is wrong? Does everyone realize just how unprepared the Western church is?
What is the “wrath” which we’re not appointed to? The Day of The Lord (DoTL). He tells us as much in verse 2, as that’s the theme of 1 Thess 5:
1 Thessalonians 5:2- “For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.”
A careful examination of Scripture reveals that it does indeed give us a timetable for the start of the DoTL:
Matthew 24:29- “Immediately AFTER the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:”
Here, The Lord tells us that the heavenly signs follow the tribulation. Then Peter (in quoting Joel 2:31), tells us that the DoTL follows the heavenly signs:
Acts 2:20- “The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, BEFORE that great and notable day of the Lord come:”
So according to the Lord and Peter, the sequence of events is:
Nowhere did the Lord or anyone else describe the Lord coming back before the trib. Not a single OT prophecy describes the DoTL as a time when the Lord comes halfway to Earth, visible only to believers, fetches us, returns to Heaven with us, and then comes back with us yet again 7 years later. The only ones the Lord ever described returning from Heaven with Him at His second coming are His angels:
Matthew 16:27- “For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his ANGELS; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.”
Matthew 25:31- “When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the HOLY ANGELS with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory:”
Mark 8:38- “Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the HOLY ANGELS.”
Luke 9:26- “For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father’s, and of the HOLY ANGELS.”
Did the Lord forget? Are we that unimportant that the Lord simply failed to mention us? Of course not. He would have never failed to mention the glorious bride emerging out of Heaven with Him if that’s what really happens.
Paul reiterated this, in the ONLY set of verses in which he SPECIFICALLY describes who returns with the Lord from Heaven:
2 Thessalonians 1:7-8: “And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from HEAVEN with his mighty ANGELS, In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:”
He’s describing Armageddon, and clearly has us here until that time. By the way, neither Zech 14:5, 1 Thess 3:13, nor Jude 14 say that saints return with the Lord from Heaven. Paul was clear that we “meet Him in the air” AFTER He emerges out of Heaven. It’s from there that we come “with” Him, in our resurrected bodies. Which is also why the wedding announcement is just moments before the Lord’s posttrib return. Wedding announcements come before the wedding, in every culture. The Lord’s coming for us after the trib, just like He said. It’s going to be awesome, and majestic, and will fulfill what the angels said in Acts 1:9. The Lord is coming from Heaven-to-Earth on the clouds, just like He went up Earth-to-Heaven on the cloud.
Peter was clear that the Lord will remain in Heaven until “the restitution of all things”
Acts 3:20-21: “And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you: Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.”
When is that? When is the restitution of all things? What did the prophets say?
Daniel 9:24- “Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.”
The Lord remains in Heaven until the 70 weeks are fulfilled.
The Lord described us being here for the trib. He warned us of how there would be false teachers and false teachings. Well, this teaching was born in the early 1800s out of one man’s private interpretation, and his contemporaries spotted it a mile away:
I think Spurgeon said it best:
“Distinctions have been drawn by certain exceedingly wise men (measured by their own estimate of themselves), between the people of God who lived before the coming of Christ, and those who lived afterwards. We have even heard it asserted that those who lived before the coming of Christ so not belong to the church of God! WE NEVER KNOW WHAT WE SHALL HEAR NEXT, AND PERHAPS IT IS A MERCY THAT THESE ABSURDITIES ARE REVEALED AT ONE TIME, IN ORDER THAT WE MAY BE ABLE TO ENDURE THEIR STUPIDITY WITHOUT DYING OF AMAZEMENT. Why, every child of God in every place stands on the same footing; the Lord has not some children best beloved, some second-rate offspring, and others whom he hardly cares about. These who saw Christ’s day before it came, had a great difference as to what they knew, and perhaps in the same measure a difference as to what they enjoyed while on earth meditating upon Christ; but they were all washed in the same blood, all redeemed with the same ransom price, and made members of the same body. ISRAEL IN THE COVENANT OF GRACE IS NOT NATURAL ISRAEL, BUT ALL BELIEVERS IN ALL AGES. Before the first advent, all the types and shadows all pointed one way—they pointed to Christ, and to him all the saints looked with hope. Those who lived before Christ were not saved with a different salvation to that which shall come to us. They exercised faith as we must; that faith struggled as ours struggles, and that faith obtained its reward as ours shall.”
Darby’s other contemporaries echoed Spurgeon’s sentiments, even earlier:
George Mueller (1805-1898): “The Scripture declares PLAINLY that the Lord Jesus will not come until the Apostacy shall have taken place, and the man of sin…shall have been revealed…” (Mrs. Mueller’s Missionary Tours and Labours, p. 148).
S. P. Tregelles (1813-1875): “The Scripture teaches the Church to wait for the manifestation of Christ. The SECRET THEORY bids us to expect a coming before any such manifestation” (The Hope of Christ’s Second Coming, p. 71).
C. J. Ellicott (1819-1905): “[I Thessalonians 4:17] ‘to meet the Lord,’ AS HE IS COMING DOWN TO EARTH…” (Commentary on the Thessalonian Epistles, p. 66).
Nathaniel West (1826-1906): “[The Pre-Trib Rapture] is built on a postulate, VICIOUS in logic, VIOLENT in exegesis, CONTRARY to experience, REPUDIATED by the early Church, CONTRADICTED by the testimony of eighteen hundred years…and CONDEMNED by all the standard scholars of EVERY age” (The Apostle Paul and the “Any Moment” Theory, p. 30).
H. Grattan Guinness (1835-1910): “…the Church is ON EARTH during the action of the Apocalypse…” (The Approaching End of the Age, p. 136).
William G. Moorehead (1836-1914): “…the last days of the CHURCH’S deepest humiliation when Antichrist is practicing and prospering (Dan. viii:12)…” (Outline Studies in the New Testament, p. 123).
A. H. Strong (1836-1921): “The final coming of Christ is referred to in: Mat. 24:30…[AND] I Thess.4:16…” (Systematic Theology, p. 567).
Robert Cameron (1845-1922): “The Coming for, and the Coming with, the saints, still persists, although it involves a manifest contradiction, viz., two Second Comings which is an ABSURDITY” (Scriptural Truth About the Lord’s Return, p. 16).
Philip Mauro (1859-1952): “…’dispensational teaching’ is modernistic in the strictest sense…it first came into existence within the memory of persons now living…” (The Gospel of the Kingdom, p. 8).
Alexander Reese (1881-1969): “…we quite deliberately reject the dispensational theories, propounded FIRST about 1830…” (The Approaching Advent of Christ, p. 293).
Norman S. MacPherson (1899-1980): “…the view that the Church will not pass into or through the Great Tribulation is based largely upon ARBITRARY INTERPRETATIONS of obscure passages” (Triumph Through Tribulation, p. 5).
People, wake up. What are you going to do when your children are ripped away from your arms, after you kept insisting to them that they don’t have to worry about the mark of the beast, because we’ll be long gone before the trib? I’ll tell you what will happen: They’ll take the mark. Your husbands and wives will take the mark. Perhaps you will take the mark. Why? You failed to warn them, because you thought popular teachers would know more than you. That you could depend on them and their assurances rather than Scripture, because, perhaps they went to seminary. Maybe they’ve written some books, or have a tv/radio show. Because no one really is a Berean anymore. We carry our Bibles around, but we don’t study them like the Bereans did. They even questioned Paul, to make sure what he said was true. Not us. If it sounds good, then that’s fine with us. So dependent are we, that Paul could warn us not to believe anyone who tries to tell us we’ll be gone before the son of perdition is revealed (2 Thess 2:1-4), but lo and behold, the Western Church has done exactly what Paul warned against.
Prepare yourselves and your families for what’s ahead.
